Soapberry nuts, fruit of the tropical Sapindus mukorossi tree offer an eco-friendly alternative to an astounding variety of everyday cleaners. The saponin content is high enough to be an effective detergent and jewelry cleaner, giving it a natural lather. Its antibacterial and antifungal qualities adds to its effectiveness as a household cleaner. Nuts can be reused as a laundy detergent or boiled for 10-15 minutes to produce a household cleaner. It is valued in Ayurvedic personal care products as a cleanser by targeting excess oils, acne and lice. Sapindus mukorossi has also been under investigation for its potential spermicidal, contraceptive, hepatoprotective, emetic, anti-inflammatory and anti-protozoal properties. All-in-all, these little berries are intriguing. They are grey-water safe, good for soil remediation and 100% biodegradable.
