I'm trying to get information on using plantain (bulk) internally for weight control and constipation. Is it safe to take it internally and how much do you take and how do you prepare it. Is capsule form better? Where can you get the capsules. I've talked to several health food stores and did not get much good information. I certainly would appreciate any information you can give me.
Psyllium seeds (Plantago psyllium or Plantago ovata)are used mainly as a gentle laxative for chronic constipation and irritated bowels, to soften the stools, making elimination faster and easier. As with any laxative, they should not be taken long term. One to two teaspoons of the seeds can be taken in a little water and followed by a full glass of water, once or twice a day. Sufficient liquid is necessary to avoid excessive intestinal drying, which would cause constipation.
The seeds are a better form than the capsules. They are available (called Psyllium seeds rather than Plantain) in most health food stores.
Efficient bowel elimination is important for weight loss. An aid such as Psyllium seeds should be used only while making changes in the diet to encourage better elimination.
