I would like to know if chicory is a stimulant like caffeine or is it just a flavor enhancer? I buy no-caffeine flavored herbal tea but some of it has chicory in it. I do not want a stimulant so now I am curious if the chicory is a stimulant. Why would some of the teas have it and others don't?
Chicory root is not a stimulant. Its actions are mildly sedative, laxative, diuretic and a liver tonic. It is widely used in coffee substitute products because it resembles the taste of coffee. Herbal teas that are made as coffee substitutes often use chicory for this reason.
Herbal teas that are made as coffee substitutes to provide stimulation rather than trying to resemble the coffee taste may include stimulating herbs such as ginseng, ginger, rosemary, cinnamon and peppermint.
