I have been using oregano for 4 years now with great results, a 100 percent oil which I purchase and use under guidance of an aromatherapist. I have read that it may well be the best defense against bird flu. What is your opinion?
Avian influenza, particularly the deadly type A (H5N1) strain, is a virus that causing a lot of concern because of its presumed potential to become transmissible among humans. Although bird flu does not spread easily from human to human at this time, a few mutations could in theory render it as contagious among humans as it is among birds and lead to a worldwide catastrophic pandemic.
Oregano oil is a powerful antiviral agent. It may well be effective against bird flu, but I am not aware of any specific studies that prove or disprove that it is effective against H5N1 bird flu. Although the research is yet not there, I know I would try oregano oil as both a preventative and as a treatment if a human bird flu pandemic ever did occur. In the absence of other credible treatments for the disease, oregano oil's general antiviral properties certainly make it worth trying.
