How should I plant peppermint and spearmint? In a garden mints need to be restrained. If you live in zone 7 or warmer, the best option is to plant each mint in a large, preferably decorative, pot. In colder zones, the plants would not make it through the winter unless the container is sunk into the ground. In that case, get a plastic garbage can for each mint, cut off the bottom and then dig a hole to sink each pot into the garden soil deeply enough so that only 5 cm (2") stick out of the ground and fill with some gravel on the bottom and the rest good well-draining garden soil. Make sure the containers are not under some downspout, since in the winter that could fill the surface of the pot with water, later freeze and smother the plants.
